SCP Board Meeting Minutes April 17, 2012 Old Business: SCP Florida filing was complete. Discussed possibility of a dining event in lieu of the regularly scheduled October club meeting; Eau Gallie library not available for the October meeting. Suggested was a potluck dinner and evening paddle. There was no response to the survey regarding the first aid & CPR training; possibly revisit at a late date. ACA memberships are expiring for some members, Judi Craig to contact those members to remind them to complete the new USCA registration and collect dues. Board agreed to pro-rate dues on a quarterly basis, for members converting from ACA and new members. No members have volunteered to assist in helping advertising events open to the public, or publicizing SCP activities. Monique Moore has agreed to temporarily coordinate this effort until a volunteer is identified. New Business: Opportunities for improving paddling in Brevard include possible enhancements for launches at Samsons Island, Turkey Creek, Pine Island, and Manatee Cove. Board agreed on sponsoring a ‘fun’ poker run during the annual June picnic. Details will be announced. Small prizes will be awarded to the two top winners; likely prizes will be in the form of gift cards. Jeanne Henninger, Judi Craig and Monique Moore will be the primary contacts for the picnic and poke run.
Next Board Meeting: July 2012.
SCP Board Meeting Minutes January 30, 2012
Old Business: Board will explore alternative club meeting places for the months of April and October; Eau Gallie library is not available. Suggestion was made to possibly substitute first aid/CPR class, or other activity suggested by the membership. Board approved expenditure for renewing the club subscription to Florida Paddling Trails Association. Judi Craig will coordinate locating a nursery or other appropriate place to purchase the memorial tree (likely Red Cedar) and have it planted; the board approved expenditure of remaining monies set aside for the memorial plaque for Virgil Hall. New Business: Board agreed to schedule quarterly board meetings, communication to be kept open, and meet at other times as needed. Board agreed to have Sean Phelan and Monique Moore evaluate prospective accountants for the first annual club tax preparation and make recommendations for filing the report. By agreement, minutes from the board meetings will be posted on the SCP web site. Board discussed need for current by-laws since constituting SCP, Inc. A draft is being prepared. Discussed expansion of the number of SCP board members, and need for additional volunteers to assume active part in club matters; e.g., club publicity. Volunteers will be solicited at the next club meeting. The board agreed that business cards and pamphlets should be updated, and new Paddler’s stickers be designed. Non-member paddling: USCA policy is that non-members may paddle TWO TIMES, for free, before joining the club. Paddling with other clubs, or members of other clubs paddling with SCP (especially with USCA) are covered by insurance. Board approved providing special programs, presentations, training, or paddling-specific discussions at each club meeting, making that the primary focus of the meeting. Suggestions welcomed. Jim Williams will begin building a Florida trip list, for starting paddles throughout our area and the state. He will poll the members for their interest and suggestions at the next meeting. Special events to encourage member paddling, entice non-members to join SCP, and for fun, will be pursued; suggested events include a Poker Run in April or May, participate in demonstrations with Village Outfitters, and clean up at Samson’s Island. Board is investigating the possibility of working to provide a suitable kayak/canoe launch area at Samson’s Island. Judi Craig is working on completion of a new photo album / scrap book and welcomes suggestions on this project. Website improvements are being put in place; the Club Calendar will be added to as new events are scheduled, and as far in advance as possible for members to make plans to attend. Yahoo Groups calendar has been disabled and all events are now on the Club Calendar. The home page will contain special announcements.
